Summer destinations for the beach lover, as well as the hiking enthusiast, are just a drive, or ferry ride, away.

We have rounded up a list of vacation spots to visit across the Northeast, from oceans to mountains.

Connecticut, while recently named one of the least fun states by WalletHub, has summer attractions for residents and tourists alike. Mystic, in particular, offers plenty of New England charm. Fan-favorites include Mystic Aquarium and Mystic Seaport.

Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket make Massachusetts a notorious hub in the summertime. The state saw more than 20 million domestic visitors in 2014 alone, according to its Office of Travel and Tourism.

"Seafood is plentiful and families can have fun on the sea whale watching or simply relaxing on the hundreds of pristine beaches," said, the official tourism site for the New England states.

Vermont is an active summer destination, despite being a state known for fall foliage. Burlington, home to Lake Champlain, offers swimming and water sports for vacation goers seeking a unique getaway.

"Burlington has a bit of an edgy feel while retaining the classic New England small city vibe," said.

There are also popular summer hot spots south of Connecticut. Wildwood Crest, New Jersey was recently named the top summer destination of 2017 by TripAdvisor. Meanwhile, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware is consistently ranked among the top beaches in the country, according to the state's tourism department.
