Westport Y gymnasts shine at local meet
More than 50 gymnasts from the Westport Weston Family YMCA gymnastic team recently competed in the Southern Connecticut league championship at the Wilton YMCA and the USAG Holiday Cup Invitational in Bridgeport, CT. The Westport team came home with many medals and trophies including the Level 3 (1st Place) team trophy at both meets. The Level 3 gymnasts captured 20 first and second place wins both in their age groups.
Westporter Sydney Dowd, 10, swept the league meet, winning first place on all four events, the all-around in her age group and the all-around in the entire Level 3 competition against 99 Level 3 gymnasts with a score of 38.4.
In the Level 3 division at the league meet, Janna Moore took first place on bars and vault, also winning the all-around in her age group with a score of 37.3.
Teammate Shira Zeiberg won vault, balance beam and the all-around in her age group with a score of 38.0.
In the Level 4 division at the league meet, Norea Niggli won first place on bars with 9.90. Savannah Schaefer come home first on the floor 9.90, first on bars 9.45 and first in all-around for her age group (37.5).
In the Level 5 division, Aisling Kelley was first on floor (9.20) and first in all-around in her age group with a score of 37.1. Sarah Cross (35.8) and Soleil Molesworth (36.0) each placed third in their age groups. The Level 5 team won the second place team trophy at the event. Both Sarah Allen and Kylie Cohen grabbed first place all-around in their age groups scoring 36.6.
Level 7 Gymnast Sarah McKinnis won individual first place medals on all four events, and finished first in the all-around at the Kristen Warner Invitational in Southington last month, scoring a 36.6.
The Level 5 teams excelled at that meet, bringing home 13 first or second-place finishes.
