WestConn volleyball team wins home opener; Sieber's late goal lifts women's soccer team to victory

DANBURY -- The Western Connecticut State University volleyball team won its home opener by dominating the final two games in a 3-1 victory over Emmanuel College Thursday night.

The Colonials, ranked 14 in the season's first New England Women's Volleyball Association Regional Poll, won the first game, lost the second and then won the next two for the win.

Leading the Colonial offense were Paxton Thornton with 21 kills andSammie Hathaway with 46 assists. On defense, Kelley Collins had 19 digs. Danielle Spangler finished with five aces and six blocks. Jamie Bertilson of Ridgefield delivered the winning kill to end the first game.

WestConn (10-1) will play host to Plymouth State at noon on Saturday and St. Joseph at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

DANBURY -- Graduate student Nicole Sieber of Newtown -- a former Immaculate High star -- converted on a penalty kick in the 80th minute and lifted the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team to a 2-1 non-conference victory over the Wentworth Institute of Technology.

Sieber was awarded the 12-yard attempt when Jillian Duran was fouled inside the box. Sieber blasted the shot into the top right corner for her third goal of the season.

WestConn, 3-2, knotted the game at 1 on Lauren Francisco's first goal of the season. She received a short pass from Cecelia Dias on the left side of the goalmouth and flicked it past Leopard keeper Jess Gardner.

Colonials keeper Amanda Simon made one save to preserve the victory.

WestConn (3-2) opens Little East Conference play on Saturday at 6 p.m. when it travels to face arch-rival Eastern Connecticut State University.
