WestConn's DaSilva earns soccer honor

Western Connecticut State University soccer star Daniel DaSilva, a former standout at Danbury High, was named first-team All-Little East Conference for his efforts this past season. The senior midfielder started all 16 games for the Colonials, who posted a 3-12-1 record.

Women's soccer

WestConn placed four players on the All-LEC first team: senior defender Tina Dias, graduate student and former Immaculate High star Nicole Sieber, sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Avery and senior midfielder Jennifer Duran.

Duran started 18 of 19 games for the Colonials (14-4-1) and was second on the team in scoring with eight goals and four assists for 20 points. Sieber, a midfielder, started all 19 games and tallied six goals and six assists for 18 points. Dias started all 19 games and collected two goals and an assist for five points while helping lead a Colonials defense that, along with Avery in goal, has posted 14 shutouts so far this season. Avery has started 18 games.

Field hockey

WestConn's Deanne Mastrocola was named to the All-LEC first team and former Pomperaug High standout Lauren Atkinson earned third-team honors.

Mastrocola, a sophomore back, started 16 of 18 games for the Colonials (8-10) and was second on the team in scoring with five goals and seven assists for 17 points. Atkinson, a junior forward, led the Colonials with 10 goals and five assists for 25 points.


The Middle Atlantic Conference and the New Jersey Athletic Conference have announced that 16 member institutions from the two leagues will participate in a football scheduling alliance billed as the MAC-NJAC Challenge in 2012 and 2013.

The partnership between the two conferences will feature a series of 16 head-to-head match-ups over the course of two seasons, with eight games taking place in 2012, and the other eight contests occurring in 2013.
