Water Rats set records at championship meets
Last weekend, Water Rat swimmers from the Westport Weston Family Y enjoyed success at various championship meets in Connecticut and Massachusetts.
From March 13-16, 40 Water Rats competed in a field of nearly 800 other swimmers aged 9 to 18 from throughout the state at Wesleyan University for the 2014 Connecticut Swimming Short Course Age Group Championships. Eight Water Rats swam at the Zesiger Aquatic Center in Cambridge, Mass., to compete in the 2014 Y New England Championships on March 15.
Competing in the 11-12 Age Group, Marissa Healy won the 50-yard butterfly on Friday with a state record time. Healy also won the 100 Butterfly Sunday.
The boys 100 freestyle relay team of Riley Twiss, Parker Lenoce, Jason Lessing and Jude Dequeljoe broke a 29-year-old New England meet record in winning their race. Their time of 57.85 seconds was nearly four seconds faster than the previous mark of 1:01.91.
The Water Rats' Short Course season concludes with the Eastern Zone All Star Meet from March 27-29, in Webster, N.Y., and the 2014 YMCA Short Course National Championship, held at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C., Apr. 1-4.
