The Staples High field hockey team was unable to duplicate any dramatics when it took on perennial power Darien in the first round of the Class L state tournament.

Just one day removed from a triple-overtime win over Norwalk in the qualifying round, the No. 16 Wreckers saw their season end at Darien on Sunday. The Wreckers trailed by a pair of goals at halftime and eventually fell to the top-ranked Blue Wave 2-1 despite a stellar effort in goal from freshman Jodie Baris.

Staples, which was playing for the second straight day after more than a week off because of Hurricane Sandy, finished the season at 9-8-0-2.

"After being off for nine days with the hurricane, they were definitely tired and sore--mentally and physically," Staples head coach Ashley Del Vecchio said.

The Blue Wave (17-1) racked up 31 shots, but Baris finished off her strong season with one of her best performances, making 18 saves.

Darien got goals from Kyla Johns and Georgia Cassidy, and led 2-0 at halftime.

"I know in her heart she really wanted a shutout. But she really stepped up being new to the team, being a freshman," Del Vecchio said of Baris. "She has a really good future ahead of her."

With Staples trailing by a pair of goals at the break, Del Vecchio asked her team at halftime to step up offensively and to improve transitioning with the ball. The Wreckers finally broke through with nine minutes left when senior Jackie Lawrence scored off the team's lone penalty corner.

"We were possessing the ball more offensively during the last 10 minutes. I actually thought at one point we were going to tie it up," Del Vecchio said. "But Darien just outshot us and they had a lot more corners than us."; 203-255-4561 ext. 114;
