The Staples High girls ski team placed second at the State Open on Monday at Mount Southington.

Fairfield (287.65) narrowly edged the defending champions (288.73) to finish first atop the nine-team competition. Joel Barlow finished third (289.35), while Wilton (297.55) and Weston (297.58) rounded out the top five.

Sophomores Jacqueline Chappo and Liz Cooperstone tied for the Wreckers' best individual finish, placing seventh (47.25). Sophomore Alex Collins finished in 13th (47.91) and junior Caitlin Hartman was 17th (48.35).

Cheshire's Kelsie Carlette had the fastest overall finish (46.30), while Darien's Fay Rizzuto and Barlow's Avery Melville finished in a tie for second (46.82).

Junior Alli Thomson was 24th (48.91) for Staples and senior Caroline Corbally finished in 25th (49.06).

In the boys' race, Staples placed seventh (295.50) out of 12 teams. Fairfield defended its title (281.24), while Glastonbury was second (285.87) and Weston came in third (288.30).

Staples' top finisher was junior Ryan Ruggiano, who came in 25th (48.08). James Ashman finished in 27th (48.50) for the Wreckers, and Trevor Penwell was 43rd (49.16).

Fairfield's Kyle Mason won the individual crown (44.20), while Glastonbury's Denis Biglin was second (45.32) and Wilton's Roger Hueglin was third (45.95).

Fairfield placed five skiers in the top 20.
