Fairfield co-op hockey coach Mark Pettorini did not plan to allow five goals in his team's game Wednesday against Staples-Weston-Shelton.

Yet Fairfield did allow five. But the Mustangs were still able to clinch a state playoff berth.

Led by two goals apiece from Kevin Robinson and Timothy Grace, Fairfield claimed an 8-5 win over Staples on Wednesday night at Wonderland of Ice in Bridgeport.

"It definitely wasn't our best game," Pettorini said. "They kind of did what they want to do, instead of what I wanted them to do."

Austin Armas had a goal and an assist, and Charlie Meder, Mike Aquila and Christopher Logan scored goals as Fairfield snapped a two-game losing streak.

Fairfield's sophomore goalie Kyle Greenhunt claimed his first varsity win. Fairfield also won its eighth game and qualified for the Division II state tournament.

"It's a relief, but we didn't play that well," Robinson said. "We've got to work on some stuff for the state tournament, because we want to go far."

"It's No. 8, we're in," Pettorini said. "It's not how I wanted to get it, but we got it, so I'll take it."

Sean Stewart and Thomas Meyers each scored two goals for Staples. The Wreckers dropped their fourth straight and fell to 4-10.

"We just can't keep the puck out of our own net," Staples coach Ralph Unker said. "We can score goals, but unfortunately, we're not that good in the defensive zone."

The scrappy Wreckers scored first, and cut Fairfield's four-goal second-period lead to 5-4 on a goal by Meyers with 1:38 left in the period.

"I've got to give my guys credit ... we only dressed 11 kids tonight," Unker said. "Take some of the bad goals away and we're right in this game."

"We played terribly unpositioned hockey," Pettorini said. "Staples has got some good kids, they can score goals."

But Grace's goal just 16 seconds into the third boosted Fairfield's advantage back to two. Robinson's goal, in which he took the puck from the boards, stickhandled through two defenders, then beat Wreckers goale William Englehart on the backhand, put Fairfield ahead 7-4.

"I don't really think too much," Robinson said. "When I get the puck I just try to get it to the net."

Just 54 seconds after Stewart cut Fairfield's lead back to two, Meder potted his goal off a rebound of Armas' shot, lifting Fairfield's advantage to 8-5.

After Meyers scored just 45 second into the game, Armas, Grace, Aquila, Robinson and Logan potted five straight, boosting Fairfield's lead to 5-1 midway through the second.

"I'm happy with the outcome," Pettorini said. "But I'm not pleased."
