Ryan Lacey, a rising Fairfield County sports journalist, has been named sports editor of the Westport News.

He replaces Doug Bonjour, who has joined the daily Connecticut Post, a Westport News sister paper, as its lead high school writer.

As a freelance sports writer, Lacey for two years has been a frequent contributor to the Post, the Westport News and other Fairfield County papers in the Hearst Connecticut Media Group.

"Ryan is a talented writer with broad knowledge of sports and of Fairfield County, and the Westport News is happy to have him on board," Jim Doody, the paper's editor, said in announcing Lacey's appointment.

Lacey is familiar with Staples High School and the FCIAC, the league in which most Wreckers teams compete, and the newspaper expects a seamless transition, Doody said.

Lacey, 25, began his new duties Monday and is based in the Westport News offices in Fairfield. He will oversee all sports coverage and report to Doody.

A Boston native, Lacey grew up in North Salem, N.Y., just across the Fairfield County border. As a college student, he lived in Ireland for three years, attending University College Cork. Returning to Westchester County, he graduated from Empire State College in 2010 with a bachelor of arts degree in history.

Lacey will be the community's primary contact for sports news.
