GFA roundup: Field hockey splits pair

Last Friday, GFA earned its first victory of the season defeating The Masters School 3-0. GFA outshot Masters 16-0. Senior Nicole Litt scored the season's first goal when she redirected a drive by junior Olivia Reynolds on a corner. Freshman Devon Wolfe and sophomore Caroline Eckert both scored goals in the second half. The team takes on King (9/16) and Cheshire Academy (9/17) this week.
The Dragons opened at home last Wednesday with a 1-0 victory over Cheshire Academy.

GFA jumped out to an early lead when senior captain Dugald Shannon scored in the third minute from an assist by junior Ben Strait. Freshman goaltender Henry Holzinger finished with seven saves for the shutout.
GFA then fell 6-3 to Trinity Pawling on Saturday. Griffin Garner led the attack with a goal and an assist. Junior Paul Bozzella (Westport) and Medvedev also tallied for the home side.
The Dragons edged King 3-2 on Monday to move to 2-1.
GFA opened the season with an 8-0 win over Harvey last Wednesday.
On Saturday the girls finished the week by winning their second straight game, this time a 3-2 triumph against Ethel Walker.
The team will be busy this week with a game against Cheshire Academy on Tuesday, followed by two FAA matches on Thursday and Saturday.
Boys cross country
GFA began its season on Saturday, racing amid a highly competitive field at the Wilton Invitational at Allen's Meadows. A highlight for GFA included freshman Sean Minson. Running in his first race, he placed 16th out of 193 boys in the 1.5-mile all-freshman class, finishing with a time of 8:28.
Sophomore Christopher Jessup ran a strong JV race finishing 76th of 234 on a 3.1-mile course with a time of 20:54. The squad was led by captains senior Danny Ross and junior Alex McCall finishing 14th and 15th, respectively, of 170 participants. Ross clocked in at 17:37 while McCall finished at 17:41. GFA will host the entire Fairchester Athletic Association (FAA) for a league-wide meet at Sherwood Island on Wednesday.
Girls cross country
The Wilton Invitational kicked off the season on Saturday. A competitive field of 126 girls in the division saw GFA place seventh out of nine teams. Junior Maggie Boudreau finished the 2.5-mile course 14th overall, crossing the finish line at 15:54. Madi McCreesh, although only in eighth grade, finished 25th overall, clocking in at 16:21. The top finisher of all GFA runners in the Wilton Invitational was Maddie Abrahamson, a freshman running in her first race, who took fifth out of 104 in the all-freshman class. She finished the 1.5-mile course in 9:39. GFA will host the entire Fairchester Athletic Association (FAA) for a league-wide meet at Sherwood Island on Wednesday.
The Dragons opened the season at home with a 0-3 loss to Convent of the Sacred Heart (10-25, 15-25, 13-25). The Dragons had trouble maintaining an offense attack against the hard-hitting Convent team. A bright spot in the game was the team's defense led junior Rory Shinnick (7 digs).
The Dragons take The Masters School in a league match Sept. 16.
