GFA roundup: Dragons girls basketball wins three straight

Against Wooster, GFA's defense came up with 27 steals and 19 deflections. Freshman Lexi Kimball had 19 points and 13 steals. Junior captain Claire Comey contributed eight points and senior Caroline Kruk chipped in seven.
Junior captain Lisa Johnson had six points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocks in the win over Holy Child. Kimball was the game's high scorer with 25 points while Daly Naughton finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Dragons topped Montfort Academy in the school's annual "Pack the House" game. In the victory, Kimball led all scorers with 19 points and six steals, while Comey added with 12 points.
GFA (13-3, 9-2 FAA) suffered its third loss of the season last week, falling 78-77 to Choate in overtime Jan. 27.

The Dragons fell behind by 11 points at the half, but came back to tie the game at the end of regulation. With 20 seconds left in overtime, and GFA up 77-75, Choate got the ball back and hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to claim the victory. Junior Jimmy Djema hit seven threes and led GFA with 28 points. Junior Zach Baines had 16 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Freshman Sunday Okeke scored 13 points, had 10 rebounds and blocked three shots.
GFA rebounded to claim a 63-46 win over Hamden Hall Jan.31. Okeke posted an impressive stat line of 13 points, 18 rebounds and eight blocks. Baines had 21 points and 10 rebounds. Djema contributed 13 points and four rebounds.
GFA then picked up a big 64-59 win over New England rival Hyde School Feb. 1. In 2012, Hyde knocked GFA out of the New England Prep School championship tournament and went on to win the title. In 2013, GFA returned the favor
The Dragons fell behind 19-6 early behind a full-court press from the hosts. GFA eventually found the formula to crack and score on the press and closed the gap to 30-29 at halftime.
The lead changed hands 13 times in the second half, and GFA eventually inching ahead 59-52 late in the game.
Hyde closed the gap and trailed 62-59 with 10 seconds left, but the Dragons completed a successful inbounding attempted and sank two free throws to clinch the win.
The GFA Wrestling team hosted its final tri meet of the year against Chase Collegiate and Hamden Hall Jan. 31. Despite having four starters out of the lineup, GFA was able to defeat Chase Collegiate 39-24 with only eight wrestlers. After dominating Chase, the Dragons competed well against Hamden Hall but fell 41-32.
The GFA Boys Squash team lost 6-1 Jan. 30 to St. Luke's. Playing at No. 2, junior Scott Brown played a strong match, winning 3-0. Senior captain No. 3 Ryan Schendel also played strong, despite coming up short in his match.
The Dragons defeated Rye 5-2 Jan. 30. GFA walked into the match with a 3-0 lead, due to illness of some Rye players. Knowing they only needed to win one match, the top four girls prepared to battle. Wins came from senior Cole Vanacore at No. 4 and Kreitler at No. 1. Seniors Tia Carson Arabella Crawford also fought for wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots.
