GFA roundup: Boys soccer season ends in NEPSAC semis
The Dragons had their season come to an end on Saturday as they fell 2-0 to Beaver Country Day School in the NEPSAC Class C semifinals.
Beaver took an early 1-0 lead in the first half and scored their second goal late in the second half to secure the win.
GFA finished the regular season as FAA regular season champions and Western New England Prep School Class C Champions with an 11-3-1 record.
GFA advanced to the semifinals of the NEPSAC Class C tournament with a dramatic 3-2 (18-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-23, 16-14) victory at Bancroft last Wednesday.
The Dragons jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the first set, but Bancroft stormed back and dominated the rest of the game. In set two GFA again took an early lead but this time the Dragons were able to hold off any comeback. The third set appeared to be in hand for GFA up 22-18 but Bancroft kept finding ways to come from behind and claimed the set. In the fourth set the Dragons found themselves down 23-21, just two points from elimination. However, Nina Rodgers stepped up and served out four straight points. The final set was tied at 14, but GFA got a crucial kill and Claire Comey (Westport) fired an ace to secure the win.
Comey had 39 assists, 11 digs and seven kills in the win, while junior hitter Allie Carey added 34 kills.
The Dragons then fell in the semifinals to Cheshire Academy 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-17) on Saturday. GFA almost claimed the second set leading 19-16 late, but Cheshire came up with some big serves to rally. Comey led the team with 17 assists, five digs and five aces. (17 assists) Carey had 11 kills. The Dragons finished as semifinalists in the FAA and NEPSAC after starting off 0-4.
