GFA boys basketball advances to Class C semifinals
The Greens Farms Academy boys basketball team advanced to the New England Class C semifinals for the fourth straight season with a 75-62 win over Wheeler (Rhode Island) on Wednesday night.
Zach Baines paced the No. 5 Dragons with 27 points 15 rebounds and four blocks. Point guard Jim Djema had 25 points and 15 assists. Sunday Okeke pulled down a season high 23 rebounds, blocked five shots and scored 10. Those three double-doubles were enough to outdistance Wheeler's 3-point shooters.
The Dragons led 34-29 at halftime, and pulled away in the second half, outscoring Wheeler 41-33.
Wheeler's top scorers were Aiden Wright (14 points), Will Gordon (12) and Graham Lynch (11).
GFA fell in the FAA quarterfinals to Brunswick in overtime Feb. 25.
On Saturday, GFA will travel to Massachusetts to face the Pingree School. The winner will advance to Sunday's championship game. Pigree is the No. 1 seed in Class C this year. The school beat GFA in December 66-58. In 2013,
GFA defated Pingree in the New England finals. Last year, GFA defeated Pingree in the semifinals.
Baines was named MVP of the previous two championship games.
