Boys Basketball: Stamford rolls past Staples with big third quarter
WESTPORT — Stamford rolled into its road matchup against a hungry Staples squad that is trying to fight its way back into the postseason picture.
But the Black Knights would play spoilers to the Wreckers’ plans.
A huge 32-point third quarter by Stamford blew the game open, as the Black Knights knocked off Staples 83-57.
“We have the ability to shoot the ball,” Stamford coach Danny Meizer said. “We had three guys hitting. I think we only missed one shot in the third quarter. We were holding them to one shot and when we do that we can get out and run very well.”
After a tight first half, the Black Knights came out in the second half on a 15-2 run to extend a seven-point lead into a 22-point lead through defensive pressure that the Wreckers struggled with.
“You’ve got to credit Stamford’s defense,” Staples coach Colin Devine said. “Their guards did a good job pressuring our guards. And I think we didn’t make plays that we usually make tonight.”
Along with the strong overall defensive effort, Stamford had four players finish in double figures, led by Jaden Bell, who finished with a game-high 24 points points off the bench.
“I just kept thinking about how Coach wanted me to contribute more,” Bell said. “And coming off the bench really motivates me so I can play better.”
PLAYER OF THE GAME
With game-high 24 points off the bench, Jaden Bell gets the honor after helping the Black Knights get on an early 15-2 run to start the third quarter.
While it was senior night for the Wreckers, it was also the first night Staples unveiled its new scoreboard.
“We know that we’ve got a tough schedule. But we know everyone else in the league has a tough schedule too. So getting better in practice, getting guys rest when we can, and getting our minds fresh and our focus fresh as we go into the latter part of the season.” — Stamford coach Danny Meizer on the Black Knights’ attempting to finish the season strong.
