It was a day when youth, by and large, took a back seat to experience.

David Litoff, a 51-year-old runner from Colorado, was first to hit the finish line Saturday in the third race of the Westport Road Runners summer series. And he had plenty of mature company in the top 10 of both the men's and women's divisions.

Litoff covered the 3.8 mile course in in 22:14, one second ahead of Adam Edelman, of Westport, and two seconds before Georgian Marcu, of Weston.

Edelman, 20, and Marcu, 37, were the youngest of the top eight finishers on a course that started and ended at Longshore Club Park.

The fourth- through eighth-place finishers were all over 40. They included, in order, David Allen, 42, of Westport; Paul Greenberg, 51, of Westport; Stephen Marsalese, 46, of Rye Brook, N.Y.; Alan Martin, 43, of Westport; and Ed O'Keefe, 45, of Fairfield.

Carolyn Murray, of New Canaan, was the first woman finisher with a time of 24:18, 12th overall.

Kori Krichko, of Ridgefield, was the second woman, with 24:37, 15th overall. Allison Glasband, of Darien, was third at 25:17, 20th overall.

Murray, 19, also was the first woman finisher in the first race of the series, a 2.3-miler on June 30.

On Saturday, she and Krichko, 20, set the pace. But six of the next seven women were mature runners.

Glasband, 34, was followed in the women's division by Kristin Johnson, 41, of Wilton; Erica Merrill, 48, of Rowayton; Tanya Cooke, 39, of Wilton; Terry Bernard, 51, Westport; and Dorit Heimer, 58, of Westport.

Overall winner Litoff's time of 22:14 was well off the course record of 19:06 set by Dave Peterson, of Fairfield in 1981.

Luke McCambley, the 22-year-old Westporter who won the series' first two races, did not compete Saturday.

During the 10-week Road Runners series, races grow progressively longer, cluminating with a 10-mile run Sept. 1.

The series features a Grand Prix scoring system for regular competitors, with points awarded to top finishers in each race.

This week's race on Saturday, July 21, is a 4.1 mile run, starting and finishing at Compo Beach. The course record of 20:35 was set by Roy Mascolino, of Westport, in 1983. The women's record of 23:05 was set by Cindy Mironovich, of Darien in 1984.
