Three swimmers and a parent have been honored with the top awards given annually by the Westport Weston Family Y's Water Rats swim teams.

The awards were presented at the annual Recognition Night dinner conducted by the Water Rat Parents Club April 26 at Bedford Middle School. High school seniors graduating from the program also were honored.

Sarah Cooperman received the Bob Knoebel Scholarship, which honors the former Family Y aquatics director and coach. The award is presented to a senior who started competing at age 8 or younger and is involved in an activity outside of swimming.

Naina Thota received the Andrew Sawyer Memorial Award for her contributions to the team. The award honors the late Water Rats swimmer who died at a young age of an undetected heart defect.

Charlie West received the Cameron Bruce Memorial Award for representing the ideals of the Family Y in and out of the pool and giving back to the community. The award honors the late swimmer who died in an accident in 2010 at Queens University in Ontario.

Mary Cooperman, Sarah Cooperman's mother, was presented the Ann Atkinson Volunteer of the Year Award. It's given in memory of the late Water Rat parent who recognized that the success of a non-profit organization like the Y is due to its volunteer corps.

The Water Rats team is a year-round, swim program at the local level, state and national levels.
