High West's A Midwinter's Night Dram is the PS5 of whiskeys

The yearly release is available now in limited quantities

Fine whiskey is one of life's more mature luxuries; you pull a bottle of scotch or rye from a cabinet to celebrate birthdays and accomplishments. The "good stuff" comes out in private company and stirs up other remarkable memories. Just reference that magical David Abbott ad from the 1960s for Chivas Regal.

In 2021, High West's A Midwinter's Night Dram Whiskey is one such whiskey befitting top-shelf praise, and it's available now, though bound to sell out.

The cult-favorite whiskey comes from High West distillery in Utah. Founded in 1879, High West releases A Midwinter's Night Dram yearly in limited quantities, taking its popular Rendezvous Rye and finishing it in French oak and port barrels. This is not mixing whiskey; this is slipper-wearing, fire-crackling, nod-off-to-a-book sipping whiskey.

At a minimum of $200 a bottle, A Midwinter's Night Dram is undeniably pricey. Part of that comes from its scarcity, but much of it comes from complexity. As the High West product page shows, you'll experience these flavor notes:

  • Nose: Brandied cherries, fig jam, sun-dried raisins, dried orange peel, baking spice, French oak toast
  • Taste: Quince paste, strawberry rhubarb crumble, vanilla caramel, molasses, toffee, leather
  • Finish: Mulling spices, candied dates, black pepper, hint of spearmint

That's a lot to experience in just one bottle. But the annual release keeps coming back because people love it. If you can't find it through Drizly or your local liquor store, Flaviar also sells A Midwinter's Night Dram, though it's going for $343.99 per bottle at present.
