On the market: Colonial has artful blend of timeless style

According to the popular saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” But that’s not always true. Even the most skilled photographer would be unable to do justice to the custom-built Colonial at 6 Wheeler Gate in the Compo Commons neighborhood of Westport.
It is difficult to capture all the details of the house, built in 1995. It truly must be seen to be believed and to fully appreciate its visual appeal and nuances. Every part of the house feels timeless even though it was built 20 years ago.
The homeowner worked closely with the architect and builder to construct the residence. Because he appreciates art, the owner not only made sure this house was built with a number of interesting features, but also treated it as a work of art and maintained it accordingly.
The gray clapboard house, which has white trim and black shutters, sits on a half-acre property off a cul-de-sac in a convenient location. It is within walking distance to the Saugatuck section of town and the Saugatuck Railroad Station. It is only minutes via car to Compo Beach and Longshore Club Park in one direction and downtown in the other.
In the fenced backyard there is a heated Gunite in-ground lap pool. Inside, the house has 4,316 square feet of living space. The interesting features begin right inside the front door. The foyer and the formal living room have double borders of dark wood inlaid in the lighter hardwood floors. The living room features a bay window and a fireplace with a marble surround with swirls of pale gray and coral colors that give it the appearance of an abstract work of art. The same type of marble serves as the surround of the fireplace in the family room. That fireplace is flanked by built-in shelving and television cabinet. Pocket doors separate these two rooms.
Two separate doors in a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows topped with transoms lead from the family room to a bluestone balcony with stairs to the backyard by the pool. The formal dining room has chair railing and pocket doors that separate it from the cherry-paneled library or office with two walls of built-in bookshelves and lower cabinets and wainscoting on the lower walls. The office also has three double hung windows, side by side by side, topped with a cornice.

The island and counters are topped with an unusual granite that, like the fireplace marble, is artistically attractive and well suited to the house.
