On the Market / Weston home blends with its surroundings

WESTON — The streets of Weston are dotted with nearly every style of house from classic colonials to vintage farmhouses, from ranches to contemporaries. The architect behind the design of the contemporary house at 20 Hunt Lane clearly did his or her homework, studying the almost three-acre property and taking into account the spectacular natural surroundings.

Any other house style would seem incongruous with this magical setting along the Aspetuck River in lower Weston. Only a contemporary style house features the walls of glass that are necessary to appreciate the direct waterfront views of the river and its waterfall. This 5,701-square-foot house has beautiful views from every window of the river and the private wooded lot that the listing agent refers to as “tranquility in the woods.”

While the interior has been renovated, the exterior is what makes this home unique, the agent said. The 12-room house, which was built in 1984, sits on a 2.80-acre level and sloping property, which contains a heated Gunite in-ground, free form swimming pool and a cabana with a television and sound system. It also has stone walkways and decks all around - a covered deck and an open deck with retractable awnings from which to view the river and listen to the mesmerizing water as it flows over the waterfall and courses through the bottom of the property.

Entrance to this property at the end of a cul-de-sac is through stone pillars topped with lanterns and down the long circular driveway lined in Belgium block. The front door of this gray vertical board house is on a wall of stacked stone with tall windows and opens into the spacious two-story foyer, which has a floating staircase to the second floor. Step down into the living room, where there are floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors to the open deck. This room is so spacious that it features a large built-in sitting area with a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace and still has plenty of room to double as a game or billiard room. It also has a built-in dry bar area with cabinetry and a wine refrigerator.

The Tuscany-inspired dining room also has floor-to-ceiling windows as well as a fireplace and sliding doors to the deck. In the new gourmet kitchen the floor of red brick is arranged in a basket-weave pattern. There is a center island topped with marble, a white ceramic subway tile backsplash, an eat-in area with skylights and two sets of doors to the deck, and high-end appliances including a Wolf six-burner range with a grill and double ovens and a Sub-Zero refrigerator. Off the kitchen is a family room and the first of the home’s two laundry rooms.

On the second floor there is a large picture window that looks down into the dining room. There are four bedrooms, two of which are en suite. The master suite features a vaulted ceiling, walk-in closets, ceiling fan, and sliding doors to a private deck. It also has a stone wall containing a fireplace. The cavernous, spa-like master bath has steam shower, heated floor, a free-standing soaking tub, two separate vanities with granite counters, and a built-in make-up desk. Also found on the second floor there is a large office or library with built-in bookshelves and the second laundry room; this one also has a utility sink.

The finished walk-out lower level has a game area with a wall of brick and a wood stove and a wood paneled room with a wet bar, sliding doors to the covered deck, a built-in window seat, and a full bath. This level has another office with two built-in desk areas and sliding doors to the covered deck. This house also has an exercise area with a mirrored wall.
