On the Market / Smaller Wilton home offers big potential
WILTON — There’s an old adage that says “good things come in small packages.” By Fairfield County home standards, 2,393 square feet is small, especially compared to the average size of many newly constructed houses, which can be double that amount.
At just under 2,400 square feet, the four-bedroom raised ranch house at 29 Old Kings Highway is a small package. It is also a good thing, and in the mind of some prospective homebuyers this house might just be a great thing. It could be just the right house for a first-time homebuyer given its asking price. It could be the right house for empty-nesters or those looking to downsize given the size of the house and the number of rooms, of which there are seven.
It could be just the right house for those who commute to work by train because of its location in southwest Wilton and its proximity to the Wilton and New Canaan Metro-North train stations. Both are only three miles away in opposite directions. Those who commute by car also have a short drive to Routes 106 and 7 and the Merritt Parkway so it’s “perfect for commuting south to Stamford or SoNo,” according to the listing agent. “If you need Walmart or Little Pub, those are just 1.5 miles out of your quiet private setting,” the agent said.
It could be just the right house for those people who enjoy living in a close-knit community; the house is located in Silvermine, a section of Wilton, Norwalk and New Canaan. The Silvermine Community Association is a nonprofit, volunteer-led organization with a membership that includes residents from specific sections of those three towns. SCA hosts a number of events throughout the year and Santa Claus will make an appearance in Silvermine on Dec. 24.
“One of the oldest traditions in Silvermine is the arrival of Santa Claus by antique fire truck on Christmas Eve. And, having received official word from the North Pole, we are happy to report that once again, Santa will arrive at the Silvermine Arts Center around 3:30 on Christmas Eve,” according to the Association’s website. The event is open only to SCA members.
This residence could be just the right house for the artist or art lover as well. They can take art classes at the nearby Silvermine Arts Center. They can enjoy the Center’s many gallery exhibitions throughout the year. And this holiday season they can shop for presents and stocking stuffers in the Gift Shop, which “offers a variety of wonderful and unique handcrafted items specially designed and made by Silvermine Guild Artists and artists from across the U.S. There is something to entice shoppers of all ages! Gifts for all occasions can be found,” according to the Center’s website. The shop has a collection of wearable art, jewelry, ceramics, sculptures, paintings, prints, photographs, and other handcrafted work.
This upgraded house was built in 1974 on a one-acre level and gently sloping property, and it has a newly remodeled kitchen and updated baths. It has an ample driveway for off-street parking. From there the owners would probably enter the home from the attached two-car garage. Visitors would likely climb the slate and railroad tie steps to the front entrance, where the red front door, flanked by sidelights from sweep

to sash or head jamb to threshold, opens into the foyer.
From the foyer steps lead up to the main living level and down to bedrooms. Upstairs the living room has a vaulted ceiling, ceiling fan, and floor-to-ceiling stacked stone fireplace with a raised hearth. Both sides of the fireplace open into the kitchen, which features granite counters, double stainless sinks, a skylight, a center island, a separate breakfast bar for two, and high-end appliances including a Thermador Professional four-burner range. In the eat-in area there are French doors to the screened porch. The porch has a vaulted ceiling, ceiling fan, and a door to a wood deck, slate patio, and the level backyard.
The main level has two of the home’s four bedrooms. The remaining two are on the lower level as is the family room, and a laundry room with a granite counter, built-in desk area, and sink. A door in this room leads into the garage where there is another long granite counter with another sink and ample cabinets; both of which are ideal for a workshop, craft room, or art and household projects.
