On the Market: New construction in Saugatuck hits the market
WESTPORT — It’s easy to confuse Laurel Road with Laurel Lane, both of which are in the same geographic location on opposite sides of Imperial Avenue. Those seeking a new home in a convenient place will want to take the turn onto Maple Grove Avenue and then a quick jog to the left onto Laurel Road where they will find a newly constructed colonial contemporary house.
Completed in late 2016, this 4,500-square-foot house sits on a level property of a quarter of an acre at 5 Laurel Road, only a mile from the Saugatuck Metro North train station. Shops and restaurants in the Saugatuck section are also easily accessible and Imperial Park is within an easy walking distance.
The house was designed by J.A. Jamieson of Weston and crafted by Westport-based Pieka Construction. Reflecting today’s lifestyle, the house is finished on four levels. This is what they call a vertical house in which living space can be maximized by building up rather than spreading out the rooms and square footage horizontally. Such a design does not sacrifice living space and it leaves more of the exterior property for recreational use.
The entrance is on the lower, or first level, which has the entrance foyer and mudroom, access to the attached under house two-car garage, and living spaces. There are wider-than-usual doorways, a full bath and a large finished room with wall-to-wall carpeting that could be used as a play or game room or an office, or other flexible use. Because of the bath it could be an in-law or au pair suite.
Walk up to the second floor which, in this house, is the main living level. It includes the formal living and dining rooms, family room and gourmet kitchen. The third floor has four bedrooms including the master suite, and the fourth floor has the fifth bedroom, a bonus room and a full bath. Artisan mill work unifies the living spaces. Throughout the house there is oak flooring stained in a gray tone.
On the main level the living room has a beamed ceiling, a gas fireplace flanked by storage cubbies and a media center above. There is also a wet bar with a wine refrigerator. The dining room has unusual wainscoting on the lower walls and a deep tray ceiling with rounded edges.
