On the Market / Female builder adds personality to new constructions
WESTPORT — Megan Robertson is a second-generation builder — a second-generation female builder. Early architectural influences came from her mother, who chose a career in construction at a time when few women were going into the field, and few were welcomed there.
“I grew up around construction,” said Robertson, of MLR Properties in Monroe, whose inspiration may also have come from her grandfather, who was a mason. Construction is still a male-dominated profession but that does not intimidate Robertson, who has been successful designing and building houses on speculation in Fairfield County — including several in Westport, and beyond. She also renovates existing houses, including restoration of historic homes, and has won the Home Builders & Remodelers Association of Connecticut HOBI Award for outstanding remodel of a home in the Northeast (in the town of Essex).
Robertson said she brings a unique perspective to her work. “I design the way I like to live,” said Robertson, the mother of three. She places emphasis on the mudroom, storage areas, and the kitchen or great room, the latter being where most people spend their time. “We tend not to use living rooms,” she said, adding it’s a sign of our changing time and lifestyle. “Kitchens are key, and she always creates a phenomenal pantry,” said co-listing agent Kelly Loucas. Examples of Robertson’s work are found in two of her newly constructed houses in Westport, which are currently on the market; one at 19 Hillspoint Road and the other at 8 Keller Lane.
Both houses come with a two-year builder warranty. The standard for most new construction is a one-year warranty, according to the listing agents. The white colonial on Hillspoint Road is a transitional house in the Greens Farms neighborhood. It was built in 2017 and features 15 rooms within 7,118 square feet of living space. It contains state-of-the-art gourmet kitchen, three fireplaces, an attached three-car garage, and a level yard with evergreen trees and an 8-foot fence for added privacy. The location of this house puts it within easy commuting distance to I-95, Post Road (Route 1), Compo Beach, and Longshore Club Park.
The white colonial at on Keller Lane is smaller than the one on Hillspoint. It was built this year on a half an acre level parcel on a cul-de-sac in the Long Lots neighborhood. It includes 12 rooms within 5,196 square feet of living space. Among its features are two fireplaces, a gourmet kitchen, and a long covered front porch. Both houses have a free-flowing floor plan and homework stations. All Robertson’s houses come with generators and she tries to stick with American and Canadian-made products. She makes sure all have ample storage including mudrooms.
“Mudrooms are a must no matter what you do,” she said. While her houses may share some features, “All of the houses are one-of-a-kind. I won’t build the same house twice. All my houses have personality,” Robertson said. Robertson’s houses are not completed until she adds the lighting. Loucas said Robertson has a real eye for selecting just the right lighting fixtures for each home. “That’s the jewelry of a home,” Robertson said. There will be an Open House at both of these houses on Sunday, Nov. 4, 1 to 3 pm, at which refreshments will be served.
