On the Market: A mini resort hits the market in Darien

DARIEN — All the houses on the Long Neck Point peninsula are desirable for their location in this waterfront community and for their stunning water views, some of which enjoy sunrises and some that are placed to view nightly sunsets, views of Long Island Sound and the Manhattan skyline.
Perhaps the most desirable of these properties is the one at 214 Long Neck Point Road on the west side of the peninsula. This estate is appropriately known as “Journey’s End” because once someone arrives chances are they won’t feel the need to go anywhere else. The name and emblem are found on the stone pillars that mark the entrance into this gated property.
This place, which is on the market for the first time in 45 years, is like a mini resort. Contained within the 2.86-acre property is a tennis court, paddle tennis court, putting green, and a waterside Gunite salt water in-ground swimming pool with cabanas. Inside the house there is an exercise pool.
The property also has a guest cottage and 248 feet of direct Long Island Sound frontage and its own dock and mooring dedicated to this property only. Its views include Noroton Yacht Club. The property is sub-dividable and in such a way that, once separated, neither parcel has to sacrifice direct waterfront. Both properties would have 124 feet of water frontage.
The main house was built in 1957. It has 5,238-square-feet of living space, four fireplaces and an elevator. The contemporary house was designed to capture the elegance of its surroundings and to enjoy water views from virtually every one of the 11 rooms. Enter the house through the extra wide paneled Dutch door. In the formal living room there is a fireplace with a marble surround and elaborate mahogany mantel, a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows and a door that leads to a long covered porch. The dining room is open to the living room.
Those who were devoted followers of the television drama series Mad Men will appreciate the kitchen, which will make them feel as if they are in an episode of the popular program that starred Jon Hamm as an advertising executive in the early 1960s. The kitchen is a total throw-back, in a good way, with its mix of aqua blue and dark-colored wood cabinetry and white ceramic tile floor. There is also a greenhouse window above the double stainless sinks in which to grow culinary herbs or small houseplants. Off the kitchen is a sitting room that features a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace with decorative wrought iron detailing.

A large breakfast room has two walls of floor-to-ceiling windows to bring in the sun and the view. The dark wood paneled family room has a stone fireplace with a raised hearth flanked by built-in bookshelves. French doors lead to an elevated stone deck. Another set of French doors in the family room access the glass conservatory, which has a field stone base, numerous windows, a barrel ceiling and a wet bar; one of two wet bars on the first floor indicating this is a place to entertain. On this main floor there is also a guest bedroom en suite.
In the paneled study or library on the second level there are built-in bookshelves and a wide fireplace with a marble surround and a mirrored mantel with dentil molding detail. There are two bedrooms on this same level.
The master bedroom suite has a floor all to itself in this split level layout. The bedroom itself has exposed beams on the cathedral ceiling, French doors to a private balcony, and a dressing room with built-in dresser drawers, mirrored walls, and wall-to-wall carpeting. The master bath has a sauna and a large shower stall with two rain heads. Off the master is a sun room and a sitting room.
