On the Market / 100-year-old farmhouse in Westport modernized

WESTPORT — The landscape of Westport is changing with the razing of old residential structures and the construction of contemporary colonials in their place. Luckily, there are many vintage structures that remain including a nearly 100-year-old farmhouse, which was modernized by a well-known Westport developer.
The house was built in 1920. In 2000 this unique modern colonial farmhouse at 2 Twin Circle Drive was designed by architect Fredrick William Hoag and rebuilt by developer David Waldman, who is spearheading the initiative to revitalize downtown Westport, particularly the Main Street area.
Perhaps the home’s most unusual feature is its hendecagon-shaped dining room; that is an 11-sided room. At first glance it appears as a rounded room at one end of the 4,341-square-foot house. The master bedroom suite at the opposite end of the house has a similar shape. Another unique feature is its front entrance. The door is anchored by a tall, white stucco structure that looks like a chimney.
The exterior of the house comprises fieldstones and board and batten wood siding painted green. It sits on a one-acre level and fenced property that is both private and centrally located. The corner lot shares a side with North Avenue only about five minutes from the Post Road (Route 1), and the house is within very easy walking distance of Bedford Middle and Staples High schools.
Two fieldstone pillars, each topped with a lantern, mark the entrance to the driveway and to the two-car attached under house garage. The front door opens to reveal a blend of old and new. Among the new features are the custom, heated Gunite in-ground swimming pool and the updated kitchen, which features a six-burner Garland range, Sub-Zero refrigerator, a center island, and granite counters. A built-in banquette creates a casual eat-in area. The cathedral ceiling has exposed hand-hewn beams with track lighting, the flooring is terra cotta tile, and one section has a red brick wall with a fireplace.
The dining room has an exposed beam ceiling with cove lighting, walls of nearly floor-to-ceiling windows, and a built-in china cabinet. Between the kitchen and dining room there is an office with a door to a small bluestone courtyard hidden behind a stone wall. This first floor also has a bedroom and a full bath.

In the living room there is a wide-planked hardwood floor, a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows, red brick, stucco and fieldstone walls, a fireplace, and a floating staircase to the second floor. At the top of the stairs there is a family room that has a mini kitchen with a sink, and French doors to the backyard and a bluestone patio with a pergola. This family room also has a half bath so it can serve as a pool cabana as well.
Then there is a long hallway that accesses the bedrooms, where both the contemporary and the classic beautifully blend together. This hall has a long wall of floor-to-ceiling glass and exposed beams on the ceiling and walls. Those windows look out to the backyard, patio, and pool and several sets of French doors provide access to those amenities.
The doors into the bedrooms are barn-style. One of the bedrooms is clearly intended for a child and features a hand-painted farm-themed mural on the walls and ceiling. The master suite not only has a semi-circular shape and exposed beams on the ceiling. It also features a stone wall, built-in bookshelves and a desk area, a walk-in closet with organizers, and a bath with a marble floor, jetted tub, double vanity with a granite counter, and shower.
