A merger of East and West coast style
WESTPORT — California meets Nantucket in the contemporary-style colonial house at 7 Wedgewood Road.
The original part of the house was built as a ranch in 1969 and a transformational rebuild was completed in 2013. The renovation of the older portion and the seamless integration of the new addition was designed by award-winning national architect, Richard Clarke.
Natural-colored cedar shingles on the exterior provide the nod to Nantucket white the configuration of those shingles coupled with the contemporary white trim give the 4,958-square-foot house a modern, west coast flare. All the while the setting and stone wall allow this house and property to remain firmly rooted in its New England charm.
True to that charm, the grounds and gardens were professionally designed by Bruce Eckerson. The perennials and other plantings complement the heated in-ground swimming pool. The house was imbued with a connection to nature from virtually every room. Numerous windows, and walls of windows, bring the attractive view inside.
A slate path crossed the green grass carpet of the front lawn to the covered front entrance into the foyer, which has dark hardwood flooring. It provides access to the sunken formal living room; formal in name only. While this house has sophisticated living and entertaining spaces they are also comfortable. The living room features a fireplace and French doors to the backyard, a bluestone patio and the pool.
The living room is open to the formal dining room, although the latter is on the same level as the foyer. This wing of the house has several bedrooms including what could be a guest suite or first floor master suite. Two of the rooms have a built-in window seat and another bedroom has French doors to a spacious sun room with a slate floor. The porch has a bead board ceiling and a door to the yard. This bedroom has exposed beams, a vaulted ceiling, and two skylights. Just outside its door is a circular reading nook with a circular staircase to the second floor. Its built-in bookshelves are curved to follow the curve of the wall.
On this separate second floor there is an office with two built-in desk areas and a door to a private balcony/deck.

The actual master bedroom is on a second floor in the newer wing of the house. It has a two-story vaulted ceiling, built-in bookshelf and lower cabinet, two walk-in closets with organizers and an intriguing master bath that combines onyx, river rock, elongated glass subway tiles and other elements to create a luxurious spa setting complete with a soaking tub facing a wall with a flat screen television. This floor also has an office.
On the other side of the living and dining rooms, the family room and gourmet kitchen are open. The family room has a wall of built-in bookshelves and another wall of floor-to-ceiling windows, a limestone fireplace, dry bar with a beverage refrigerator, French doors to the pool and patio, and three skylights.
