STAMFORD — A homeless man was charged with robbery after getting into a scuffle with a loss prevention officer at Macy’s that led to the office’s hand cut by a broken cologne bottle, police said.

Sgt. Michael Franzetti said police were called to Macy’s at 3:45 p.m. Monday on a report of a shoplifter in custody.

When police arrived, they were told loss prevention had watched as Melvin Morales, 39, of Pacific Street, entered the store and shoplifted a few bottles of cologne. Store security said they have been trying to catch Morales for months and said he has been coming into the store and shoplifting since April, Franzetti said.

When an asset protection officer confronted Morales and tried to take him into custody, Morales struck the officer multiple times in the face, Franzetti said. When both men fell to the ground. two bottles of cologne that Morales was trying to steal broke, cutting one of the hands of the asset protection officer.

Morales was charged with third-degree robbery, fourth-degree larceny, disorderly conduct, violation of probation and failure to appear in court. He was held in lieu of a $50,000 court-appearance bond.
