Greenwich police: Drunken driver had left child alone before crash
GREENWICH — A 22-year-old woman who left a 2-year-old child alone in a Greenwich residence was subsequently involved in a motor vehicle accident in the middle of the night back in October, police said.
Ana Patricia Dewitt of Shelton turned herself in at police headquarters last Saturday after an investigation into a car crash that occurred at 3:20 a.m. Oct. 27 on Pemberwick Road near Buena Vista Drive, GPD Public Information Officer Lt. John Slusarz said.
At the time of the accident, Dewitt was supposed to be caring for a 2-year-old child, police said. The child was found at a local residence, unharmed but alone, he said. Police did not release any information about the child’s relationship to Dewitt or the circumstances that led to the child being left alone on the night of the accident.
DeWitt was behind the wheel of a vehicle that had struck a wall, causing the airbags to deploy, Slusarz said. She was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police executed a search warrant for records of blood tests from the hospital, which provided evidence that she had been drinking at the time of the accident, he said.
Dewitt was charged with risk of injury to a child, failure to drive in the proper lane, illegal operation of a vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and failure to wear a seat belt.
She posted $25,000 bond and is due in Stamford Superior Court on Dec. 13.
