Smith: An educator provides unique perspective

It is a privilege and joy to serve our community as a member of the Westport Board of Education. Education is both my profession and my passion. As the only professional educator on or running for the board, my experience and skill set provides a unique perspective for challenges we face.
I received my masters in teaching from Fordham University and hold a BA in business management. I worked as an elementary school teacher and academic interventionist in Westchester County, N.Y. for over 10 years, and was an educational consultant in Manhattan before moving to Westport in 2008.
My time in the classroom as well as my expertise in curriculum development, assessments and standards-based instruction, enables me to provide insights on the impact of academic changes for students and teachers. Throughout last year's school-budgeting process, I helped balance academic improvements with fiscal responsibility to advance the Westport 2025 Initiative and achieve our schools' goals.
As a board member, I would advocate continuous improvement of our curriculum in a fiscally disciplined manner and work to ensure the safety of our schools, while maintaining a welcoming and enriching learning environment.
I served as the vice president of fundraising for the Kings Highway Elementary School PTA Executive Board and on the executive board of my children's preschool. I am an active member of the Westport Young Woman's League and served on the Westport Library Benefit Committee.
My husband Dave and I have four children, Caleb (8), Nathan (6), Chloe (4) and Noah (2). I am vested in our public schools and committed to provide the children of Westport the best educational experience. I am excited to continue serving Westport as a member of the Board of Education.
