Y response

In a letter printed nearby, Matthew Mandell suggests once again that the Westport Weston Family Y build a new facility at Baron's South instead of Mahackeno.

Mandell is beating a very dead horse. He is advocating a plan that has been formally rejected by every body of town government that has considered it, at least four times in the course of 11 years. Further, when it was proposed in 1999, the idea of a Y at Baron's South generated over 100 letters in opposition from neighbors and others, many citing exactly the same objections raised by opponents of the Y at Mahackeno.

In September 1999, the Baron's South Planning Committee, chartered by Diane Farrell, emphatically rejected a Y at Baron's South, by a vote of 7--1.

Farrell explicitly rejected a Y at Baron's South.

In September 2001, the Planning and Zoning Commission, in a letter to Diane Farrell, explicitly opposed siting any private facilities on town-owned land.

In 2007, Gordon Joseloff emphatically rejected a Y at Baron's South in favour of senior housing.

Mandell's letter says that town-hired independent engineers Weston and Sampson "told an RTM Committee" that a Y could be built at Baron's South. I don't know what Mandell is referring to, but the formal Weston and Sampson study completed for the town in 2007 and presented to the RTM and others explicitly recommended against a Y at Baron's South, so Mandell is either referring to something less well publicized, or his memory is faulty.

A Y at Baron's South is a fantasy whose only supporters are opponents of the Y at Mahackeno. It is time to move on.
