Yankees rugby set to compete for regional crown
WESTPORT — The Fairfield Yankees Rugby Football Club, Fairfield County’s local men’s rugby team, continue their pursuit of a national title after resounding victories during the Empire Rugby Football Geographic Union (Empire GU) playoffs. This Saturday, April 30, the Yankees will take on Rockaway Rugby Club at 1 p.m. at Staples High School for the Empire Geographic Union Conference Final.
“This team’s preparation, fellowship and perseverance led them to victories over strong opponents throughout the playoffs,” said David Lyme, head coach of the Fairfield Yankees RFC in a press release. “Through our principled approach and adherence to the foundations of rugby, the Yankees have proven their ability to win both on and off the field. These gentlemen continue to show me through example the definition of dedication and sacrifice, they continue to amaze me with their outstanding character and athleticism.”
During the Fall 2015 season, the Yankees led the Empire GU outscoring their opponents 587-101 and going 9-1. Their regular season success secured the team a third place seed in the Empire GU playoffs. The Yankees continued their strong play in their warm-up matches this spring going 3-0 against the Division II men’s teams of Hartford RFC, White Plains RFC, and Morris RFC. Thus far in the playoffs the Yankees outscored Brooklyn Rugby 47-12 and North Jersey Rugby 83-7. The Conference Title match will surely be great rugby to watch as the Yankees take on No. 4seed Rockaway Rugby Club.
Founded in 1975, the Yankees have a strong history of regional and national success. Most recently, the Yankees won the 2004 national championship title. The Yankees are now a part of the Fairfield Rugby Club which features organized play at the mini (U10s), middle school, high school and university levels.
Attendance at the game is free of charge. Individuals looking to learn more about the sport or simply missing quality rugby are invited to join the team at Staples. Spectators and guests are also invited to attend post-match social events.
