The Westport Weston Family Y will host a public meeting Monday, June 24, to discuss construction work scheduled to begin next month at Exit 41 of the Merritt Parkway.

The meeting is set for 7 p.m. in the board room of the Y's main building at 59 Post Road East.

Widening the Merritt Parkway-Route 33 connector and reconstruction of the northbound exit ramp are part of safety improvements tied to the Y's construction of a new complex on its adjacent Mahackeno property.

The work is being funded entirely by the Y, which said construction is scheduled to begin the week of July 15. Both the state Department of Transportation and the Westport Traffic Commission have approved the project.

Present at Monday evening's informational meeting will be Y officials, contractors, a civil engineer and traffic consultant, the Y said. People in attendance will have the opportunity to ask questions.

The Exit 41 project includes:

Widening the connector between Route 33 and the northbound ramps from two lanes to four.

Reconfiguring the northbound exit ramp, widening it to two lanes and adding "smart" signalization.

Adding new signals to the northbound entrance ramp.

Incorporating Route 33 traffic signals into the "smart" signalization plan.

The Y broke ground on its new, 54,000-square-foot building in February on the 32-acre Mahackeno property along the Saugatuck River where its summer camp is located. The new headquarters is expected to open in September 2014, the Y said.
