The Staples wrestling team is close to finally having a full lineup that is able to compete at each weight class, and first-year coach Jesse Koproski is excited to see what this group is able to accomplish.
The Wreckers fell 48-27 to Norwalk to begin the season on Wednesday as the Bears were able to fill most weight classes. But with several athletes returning from injuries and adjustments to the lineup, Staples is in line to fill each weight.
“I'm excited to be involved in anyway I can,” wrote Koproski, a former assistant who stepped in for David Bernstein prior the season beginning, in an email. “We will have two wrestlers — Alex Walton and Luke Montgomery — returning from injury, and several wrestlers will be dropping to their competition weight, which will leave us hopefully only missing a 220 pounder.”
Staples lost several talented wrestlers in Justin Ludel and Charles Lomanto to graduation, but it returns a potential FCIAC contender in Matt Prior. The senior captain placed fifth in his weight class (138 pounds) at FCIACs a year ago, and will compete at 145 this term.
“Matt is a very hard worker who has improved himself immensely in the offseason,” Koproski wrote. “He is the most successful returning varsity wrestler from last season.”
Staples will also be led by Montgomery, a senior, and junior Kieran Clarke. Clarke wrestled at 113 pounds a year ago — and went 12-9 — but is in the 152 pound class for 2015-16.
“(Clarke is) a relentless wrestler,” Koproski wrote. “He is building on his success in the previous two seasons and should be one of our best competitors.”
Joe Tuccinardi (160-170) will also look to place at the FCIAC level, while fellow senior Jon Maragos (170-182) will also be in the mix. Sophomore Dominic Arciola (138-145) has experience at the middle school level and could develop into a key contributor.
“(Arciola) should be one of the bright fixtures in our line up going forward,” Koproski wrote.
Koproski cited a host of new wrestlers to the program, including David Beguhn (285). Beguhn got a pin victory in his first varsity match against Norwalk.
Staples will compete at the Ludlowe invitational on Saturday,.
