WESTPORT — Despite the chilly weather, the spring season is almost here.

After winning the Class LL state championship a year ago, the Staples Wreckers baseball team will look to repeat. Wreckers coach Jack McFarland said that will be a major point for this season.

“We’ve got there with great pitching depth,” he said. “The key is going to be finding the pitching depth, kids are going to have to step up to do that.”

The Wreckers are returning several members from last season team, including Chad Knight, Chris Drubal, and Matt Stone, McFarland said that despite losing leadership from a year ago, he’s been excited to see the team coming together — led by the stout players up the middle.

“They’ve been doing a great job,” he said. “The real strength is up the middle. We’re going to stand out pretty strong with that.”
