Elaine Whitney has been re-elected chairwoman of the Board of Education, as the panel chose its leaders Monday based on results of the Nov. 5 municipal election.

Whitney, who has been the board's top official since taking over from Jim Marpe, when he resigned last November to run for first selectman, was re-elected unanimously after being nominated by fellow Democrat Mark Mathias, who spoke via Skype. He said he's seen Whitney's "track record of results" first-hand, and her "professional approach" in serving as chairwoman.

"She's a strong effective leader," he added.

Jeannie Smith, a Republican, seconded the nomination calling Whitney "a problem-solver" who is "trustworthy" and "focused." She said she's also benefited by having Whitney as her mentor.

"I am humbled and honored and excited to continue our important work together," Whitney said.

Smith was then elected vice chairwoman of the board, and Michael Gordon was named the board secretary.
