Gloria Ginter, a Westport Animal Shelter Advocates volunteer from Westport, recently collected thousands of dollars worth of provisions for both families and their pets in the New York area worst hit by Hurricane Sandy.

Items, collected from local merchants, included dry and canned dog and cat food, cases of bottled water and nonperishable food, according to a release.

Most of the merchandise is being delivered to targeted New York areas by Bikers Against Animal Cruelty and Walgreens.

Items still needed include dog and cat food, blankets and towels, flash lights and batteries, propane heaters and cooking stoves with gas, canned goods, soup, paper towels and rope, among other things.
