Westport sculptor and arts educator Steffi Friedman will be honored by Neighborhood Studios of Fairfield County at its Spring Gala on Sunday, March 30, at the Westport Country Playhouse. The event will also feature a performance by Dance Theatre of Harlem.

Friedman has been a volunteer teacher at Neighborhood Studios since 2007. A native of Berlin, Germany, she and her family fled the Nazis in 1938, making their way to the U.S., where Friedman studied art at Pratt Institute and Columbia University. Her commissioned works are represented in more than 150 collections throughout the country, including Temple Israel in Westport. She has served as a board member of the Society of Connecticut Sculptors, the National Sculpture Society, the International Sculpture Society, and the Westport Arts Center.

This is the second time Friedman will be honored by Neighborhood Studios. She received the 2008 Pat Hart Service Award, which recognizes the generosity and dedication to arts education of an individual or organization.

"Steffi has been an inspiration to the students, and has a real personal interest in their lives," board chair Laurie Gross, of Westport, said in a release. "The Bridgeport and Westport communities are happy to be coming together on March 30th to say thank you to this outstanding woman."
