In their efforts to upgrade security at Westport's public schools in the wake of the Newtown school massacre, school officials said this week they have hired a new administrator to oversee school safety and facilities.

Theodore Hunyadi, previously the director of maintenance services at Fairfield University, will be the new director of security and facilities.

He will be paid an annual salary of $125,000, according to Marge Cion, director of human resources.

Officials, however, said Hunyadi's hiring does not represent an expansion of the school district's administrative ranks.

The job replaces the former position of director of facilities, said board Chairwoman Elaine Whitney. "So bringing on Mr. Hunyadi will not result in a net change to our staffing levels," she said Tuesday.

Hunyadi also had previously been on the crisis management team at both the Fairfield University and Fairfield College Preparatory School, Cion said.

Officials had hoped to have Hunyadi on board in July, but the hiring process took longer than planned and Hunyadi will start in the job Sept. 2, she added.
