A fire that erupted on the roof of a Post Road restaurant, where a roofing crew was at work Tuesday afternoon, was extinguished before inflicting damage to the eatery and other outlets in the shopping center.
A caller to Westport police about 2 p.m. reported seeing flames on the roof of the Little Kitchen Restaurant in the Compo Shopping Center.
Firefighters dispatched to the scene found smoky conditions on the shopping center's roof.
Workers on the roof, according to fire officials, were using a torch and ignited filters in the base of an air-handling unit. The combustible filters were made from natural sea grass, sandwiched between metal screening, fire officials said.
The fire damage was contained to the air units, but no stores in the shopping center were affected.
The Fire Department initially dispatched three engines, a ladder truck and a shift commander at the first report of the roof fire.
