John Backus, 47, of 19 Davenport Ave., was charged with driving under the influence, failure to drive right and operating a motor vehicle without a license around 9:30 p.m. Sunday. He was allegedly observed crossing the double-yellow center line while traveling west on Charles Street.

When Backus was pulled over, he had an odor of alcohol on his breath, according to police. He failed a field sobriety test and was taken into custody. He refused to take a Breathalyzer test at police headquarters, police said.

Bond was set at $260 and he is scheduled to appear Sept. 16 in Norwalk Superior Court.
