When Westporters vote on Nov. 7, they must remember that Westport has been the rare success story during Connecticut’s ongoing financial crisis. Politicians in Hartford have raised taxes and cut services, but due to the remarkable forward-thinking leadership of First Selectman Jim Marpe, Westport continued to fund our world-class schools and held property tax rates flat.

Fully aware that Hartford’s anti-business policies have seen employers large and small abandon the state, Jim knew that selecting Board of Finance member Jen Tooker as his running mate was the right choice to keep Westport growing stronger during fiscally challenging times. Over the past four years, with Jim at the helm, Westport has paid down our long-term debt by more than 25 percent, expanded our residential and commercial tax base by 12 percent, invested in our infrastructure and amenities, and still maintained high quality Town services. There isn't anything more you can ask of your local elected officials.

Jim Marpe and Jen Tooker are experienced managers with a proven track record of tangible results. Their successes have contributed to Westport’s well-earned reputation as a wonderful place to work, live and raise a family. They are also non-partisan leaders who embrace a collaborative style that exemplifies the best in public service. Both Jim Marpe and Jen Tooker served on the Westport Board of Education and maintain an unwavering commitment to our schools. Due to their extensive experience, they know how to keep Westport on a sound financial footing and how to protect our Town and schools from pending state funding cuts, while still maintaining high-quality town services.

Jim Marpe’s and Jen Tooker's efforts to keep Westport strong will be greatly enhanced by the election of Andrea Moore and Vik Muktavaram to the Westport Board of Finance. They are not only successful financial professionals who will stand up for Westport taxpayers, they are two of Westport’s leading education advocates, committed to keeping the quality of Westport’s schools a top priority. Andrea is a Westport native and former financial services executive, proud to be raising her daughters in her hometown.

She is an RTM member, representing District 9, serving on its Education Committee, and a former PTA President. Vik is currently a member of Westport’s Board of Education and a risk management consultant. He immigrated to the United State for a better life, and after living in many different places across this country and finding success, he and his wife chose Westport to raise their family and call their home. Andrea and Vik share a genuine love for Westport, and are committed to its success in the future.

Current Planning and Zoning Commission alternate Jon Olefson, is an outstanding candidate to serve on the P&Z. He is a passionate defender of your property rights. A successful corporate attorney, Jon brings an experienced and thoughtful voice to the Commission. He was involved in the development of the Town’s Plan of Conservation and Development and is dedicated to preserving Westport’s beauty and traditions for future generations. Jon will use his extensive experience and professional skills to benefit Westport’s residents.

We are extremely fortunate to have the current Chairman of the Flood and Erosion Commission, Tom Hood, running for the Zoning Board of Appeals. Tom will be a tremendous asset to the Commission with his vast land use knowledge and professional experience as a civil engineer, architect and businessman. Tom will bring a thoughtful, deliberative approach to his role and is dedicated to ensuring Westport residents are always treated with respect and fairness.

Current Board of Education members Karen Kleine and Jeannie Smith are running for re-election and round out our stellar slate of Republican candidates. They will continue to work tirelessly on behalf of our students and the community to strengthen our award-winning educational system and advocate for smart, fiscally responsible policies. Collaborating with Jim Marpe and Jen Tooker on the Board of Selectmen, and fostering an improved school budget process with Andrea Moore and Vik Muktavaram on the Board of Finance, Westport’s schools will be in capable hands.

On Nov. 7, support proven leaders with real-world experience and an impressive track record of results. Our Republican team is committed to continuing to lead Westport in a positive, non-partisan direction that respects every resident. Please vote Row “B” - Jim Marpe, Jen Tooker, Andrea Moore, Vik Muktavaram, Jon Olefson, Tom Hood, Karen Kleine and Jeannie Smith - to protect Westport’s schools, property values and quality of life for this generation and the next.

Tim Wetmore is the Chairman of the Westport Republican Town Committee.
