Westport Fire Department's new ladder-tower truck was dispatched on its first call Friday -- the first day it was officially placed in service.

The new Sutphen Ladder Tower replaces a 1992 Sutphen Tower that was destroyed during a storm that wreaked havoc in town March 13-14 of last year. A fallen tree crushed the truck's boom and bucket on the scene of a call.

The new truck -- which cost about $710,000 -- was called in action for the first time Friday to what firefighters said proved to be a relatively minor incident of a malfunctioning sprinkler system in a commercial building.

Prior to being placed in service, firefighters trained on and outfitted the new truck for about two and a half weeks.
