WESTPORT — A goal that started six months to compete, did so for the Westport/Weston Family YMCA exhibition gymnastics team this weekend.

As the team bested the rest of the competition at the USA Gymnastics Gymfest National Championships to earn the gold medal.

“It was real fun and very exciting,” director Sally Silverstein said. “It was a tremendous amount of work. I’m so proud of them.”

Battling teams from across the country, the squad’s routines were tops over the field at the competition in Cincinnati. Due to the victory, the squad earns a spot in the Members of the 16th World Gymnaetrada in Dornbirn, Austria in 2019.

One of only two YMCA’s in the nation that have an exhibition gymnastic team that compete in USA Gymnastics events — most others are club affiliates — the girls range from ages 9-18 and will be competing for five minutes with choreographed numbers against exhibition gymnastic teams from across the nation.

“This is the fun part of my job,” Silverstein said with a laugh. “I’ve been here for 30 years . I just love these kids. I love this community.”

Westport/Weston finished with the goal, as a squad from Wisconsin received silver, and a team from Texas rounded out the top three, Silverstein said.

Each of the top teams will be going on the Austria in 2019.
