The Westport Weston Family Y is open to the public today (Friday, July 22) as a cooling center where people can escape the soaring heat and humidity -- and even take a swim.

The air-conditioned Y planned to admit non-members at no charge beginning at 12:30 p.m. and remaining open until 9:30 p.m. The Y is downtown at 59 Post Road East.

"We invite anyone in town to use the Y as a cooling center, particularly those most at risk from high heat and humidity -- the youngest and oldest of our neighbors," said David Cohen, the Y's vice president of operations.

He said the public could "chill out" in the Y's public areas, including the Bedford Room. Open swim hours are offered until closing, and the gym is open for basketball.
