An SUV that veered off Compo Road South on Thursday evening smashed into a utility pole and tore down wires.

The driver of the 2004 Land Rover was not seriously injured, firefighters said, avoiding severe injuries because the vehicle's airbags deployed.

The crash took place shortly before 6 p.m. in front of 241 Compo Road South, knocking down the utility pole and disrupting electrical service to neighboring customers.

The driver, an unidentified Westport woman, was examined at the scene by Westport EMS personnel, and refused to go to a hospital for further examination.

Crews from Northeast Utilities later removed the severed pole and the Land Rover was towed from the scene.

Power was restored in the area by about 7:30 p.m., fire officials said.

The accident is being investigated by Westport police.
