Westport RTM candidate: Ross Burkhardt
Representative Town Meeting-District 3 candidate
Current job: Retired president and CEO of not-for-profit New Neighborhoods, Inc.
Education: Putney School; B.A. in history, University of Wisconsin; master’s in community planning and area development, University of Rhode Island.
The most important issue in this election: I will work on proposals to solve our traffic problems such as utilizing CT’s Safe Streets programs and will work with the Department of Public Works and the State in implementing traffic calming measures.
Other issues: I will work with “Sustainable Westport” and other groups in developing policies and obtaining resources needed to reduce our carbon footprint to “Net-Zero”; I will advocate for the preparation of resiliency plans for coastal areas and infrastructure vulnerable to sea-level rise and flooding. The bridges crossing the Saugatuck are particularly vulnerable.
Family: I have been married to Janie Bernstein Burkhardt for almost 50 years, 41 of which were spent living in Westport. Janie is a professor of ESL at NCC. Our daughter, Gillian, is a graduate of Staples and is an OBGYN working at the University of New Mexico Medical School. Our son, Jonathan, is also a graduate of Staples and works as an illustrator, graphic designer, and author in New York City.
Previous elected offices, community group affiliations: I was a commissioner of the Westport P&Z and Commissioner of the Westport Housing Authority. I am the president of the Wassell Lane Corporation and the past board member of Homes with Hope.
