WestConn women's soccer team knocked out in Division III Tournament

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team lost 1-0 to the University of Rochester Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

The Yellowjackets (12-4-3) will take on SUNY Oneonta (16-4-2) today in the second round. Oneonta defeated Roger Williams University, 3-0, in the other first round match on Friday.

Rochester scored what proved to be all it needed when Bridgette Varin had an uncontested opportunity after the WestConn defense failed to clear Brittany Huber crossing pass in the fourth minute. It was Varin's seventh goal of the season and the first the Colonials allowed since September 22, ending a 13-game shutout string.

With 27:30 remaining in the first half, Huber nearly put the Yellowjacket up 2-0 but her shot from the left side of the box caromed off the left post. Seconds later her attempt off the rebound was gathered by WestConn keeper Caitlin Avery.

Inside of 10 minutes remaining in the first stanza, Jennifer Duran and Nicole Sieber had quality attempts to even the score at 1-1, but their shots went wide left and high over the goal, respectively.

In the 68th minute, Lindsey LeConche had WestConn's sixth shot but it sailed over the cross bar. Minutes later, Tina Dias' attempt was blocked by the Rochester defense.

An apparent hand ball by a Rochester defender in the box, in the 80th minute went unnoticed and play continued on, nullifying any chance for a penalty kick by the Colonials.

WestConn (15-5-1) continued to pressure the Yellowjackets defense over the final 45 minutes but could not put the ball away.

Avery finished the afternoon with two saves for the Colonials while Bridget Lange was challenged to make only one save for the winners.

WestConn was making its ninth appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Its most successful season came in 2007 when it advanced all the way to the National Final Four.
