WestConn men stun Keene State in LEC semis

KEENE, N.H. - Senior midfielder Matt Cusack of New Milford had three goals and an assist to lead the fourth-seeded Western Connecticut State men's soccer team to a 4-1 upset victory over top-seeded Keene State in a Little East Conference tournament semifinal Wednesday.

WestConn (13-4-2) advances to the championship game against second-seeded
Rhode Island College , which tied third seed Plymouth State 1-1, but advanced on penalty kicks. RIC is making its first trip to the finals while WestConn, the 2003 LEC champions, will be making their third appearance. The championship game will be played at Rhode Island College on Saturday at a time to be determined.

Defending champion Keene State (12-3-3) scored first in Wednesday's semifinal, as Ralph Rocco gave the Owls a 1-0 lead in the second minute.

The Colonials tied the game four minutes later on a shot by Cusack that found the right corner of the net. Cusack gave WestConn a 2-1 halftime lead with 14 seconds remaining in the half when he headed in a cross from Bill Goncalves.

WestConn added two insurance goals in the second half. Cusack scored his third of the game and 14th of the season, in the 67th minute and Bradley Fidler completed the scoring with his 15th goal of the season on a breakaway.

WestConn goalkeeper Daniel Michalowski preserved the victory with three saves. WestConn (13-4-2) 2 2 - 4
