TV journalist Jeff Pegues, a Weston resident, is leaving WABC-TV in New York to become a CBS News correspondent, CBS announced.

Pegues will be based in Washington and begin his new duties July 8, reporting for all CBS News broadcasts and platforms, CBS said in a news release May 29.

A graduate of Staples High School in Westport, Pegues has been at WABC for nearly 10 years, serving as a reporter and backup anchor.

He has covered many stories of national and international scope. In 2008, he broke the 2008 child custody story of David Goldman, a New Jersey father who was involved in a five-year custody battle with his son's Brazilian relatives. Pegues' coverage gained the attention of the U.S. State Department, and eventually helped reunite Goldman with his 9-year-old son.

Before joining WABC in 2003, Pegues had been a weekday anchor and reporter at WBAL-TV, the NBC affiliate in Baltimore. Previously, he had been an anchor for WSVN-TV, a Fox affiliate in Miami.

A star athlete at Staples, Pegues was a scholarship football player at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
