Two cars collided Tuesday afternoon on the busy Post Road in Westport, but although firefighters report the smoky crash tied up traffic, serious injuries were avoided.

The collision between a Honda Element SUV and a gray sedan took place about 3:15 p.m. on Post Road East near the Super Shop & Stop.

Initial reports indicated a fire had erupted, but when firefighters, police and Westport EMS arrived on the scene, they discovered smoke was triggered by airbag deployment in one of the vehicles.

The vehicles blocked a lane in each direction in the middle of the Post Road, causing a traffic jam for the duration of emergency operations, firefighters said.

The driver of the vehicle with the deployed airbag had to be helped from the wreck and was placed on a back board for transport by ambulance to Norwalk Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, firefighters said. The other driver reported no injuries.

Both vehicles had to be removed from the scene by flatbed truck.

The accident is being investigated by Westport police.
