Two groups hand out scholarships

Two local organizations have awarded college scholarships to a total of 18 students, including 17 members of Staples High School's Class of 2012 and one adult.
Westport Woman's Club
The Westport Woman's Club awarded a total of $27,500 to 11 recipients, including an adult woman who plans to attend nursing school. The awards were based on academic achievement, community service, extracurricular activities and financial need, the club said in a news release.
Recipients and colleges they plan to attend are: Hanna Ahlgrim, Loyola University, Maryland; Kyle Bacon, University of Connecticut; Lucy DeFlavio, University of Vermont; Carson Einarsen, Savannah College of Art & Design; Maeve Flaherty, Brown University; Jessica Guo, University of Connecticut; Kyle Mikesh, Marist College; Michelle Muller, Savannah College of Art & Design; Jay Tsai, Georgetown University; and John Watson, Champlain College. The adult, Mami Ngombabu, plans to attend St. Vincent's College of Nursing.
Staples Music Parents
The Staples Music Parents Association said it has awarded scholarships to seven student-musicians who plan to study in the fall at schools of music or conservatories.
Awarded grants were: Austin Alianello, Wheaton College Conservatory; Ellen Kempner, Sarah Lawrence College; Michael Ljungberg, University of Massachusetts School of Music; Danny Pravder, Skidmore College; Rachael Shapiro, Oberlin College; Chelsea Steinberg, University of Massachusetts School of Music; and Sam Weiser, New England Conservatory and Tufts University joint program.
